Galaxy group and smudges

Other objects within the Webb image, while less prominent, are equally interesting scientifically. For example, Frye and her team (which includes nine students from high school to graduate students) identified five multiply lensed galaxies that appear to be a baby galaxy cluster forming about 12.1 billion years ago. There are another dozen candidate galaxies that may also be part of this distant cluster.

In July 2022, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope observed El Gordo, a galaxy cluster that existed 6.2 billion years after the big bang. It was selected as the most massive galaxy cluster known at that time in cosmic history. The resulting image reveals a variety of gravitationally lensed galaxies, including striking objects nicknamed the Fishhook and the Thin One. Come with us on a video tour of this new infrared image from Webb. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA

«While additional data are required to confirm that there are 17 members of this cluster, we may be witnessing a new galaxy cluster forming right before our eyes, just over a billion years after the big bang,» said Frye.

A final paper examines very faint, smudge-like galaxies known as ultra-diffuse galaxies. As their name suggests, these objects, which are scattered throughout the El Gordo cluster, have their stars widely spread out across space. The team identified some of the most distant ultra-diffuse galaxies ever observed, whose light traveled 7.2 billion years to reach us.

«We examined whether the properties of these galaxies are any different than the ultra-diffuse galaxies we see in the local universe, and we do actually see some differences. In particular, they are bluer, younger, more extended, and more evenly distributed throughout the cluster. This suggests that living in the cluster environment for the past 6 billion years has had a significant effect on these galaxies,» explained Timothy Carleton of Arizona State University, lead author on the fourth paper.

«Gravitational lensing was predicted by Albert Einstein more than 100 years ago. In the El Gordo cluster, we see the power of gravitational lensing in action,» concluded Rogier Windhorst of Arizona State University, principal investigator of the PEARLS program. «The PEARLS images of El Gordo are out-of-this-world beautiful. And, they have shown us how Webb can unlock Einstein’s treasure chest.»

What is the etymology of the Spanish word “gordo” and how does it relate to its English translation?

The Spanish word “gordo” comes from the Latin word “gurdus,” which means “stupid” or “dull-witted.” Over time, the meaning of the word evolved to refer to someone who was “fat” or “chubby.” This shift in meaning likely occurred because people who were overweight were often seen as slow or lazy.

In English, the word “gordo” is most commonly translated as “fat” or “overweight.” However, it can also be used to describe someone who is “big” or “large,” as well as someone who is “important” or “influential.” This range of meanings is similar to the English word “fat,” which can be used to describe someone’s physical size as well as their level of wealth or success.

Can a Mexican citizen win the lottery?

Yes, a Mexican citizen can win the lottery. However, as with all lotteries, it is important to be aware of any applicable laws and regulations, as well as taxes and fees, to ensure that everything is done properly and according to the rules.

Additionally, it is important to make sure that the lottery being played is legitimate and properly licensed by the government, as some unlicensed and illegitimate lotteries may not be a legal option for citizens in the country.

Furthermore, those who win the lottery in Mexico may be subject to taxation and fees depending on the lottery prize, and it is important to be aware of such fees before entering a lottery. It is also important to note that some lotteries are restricted to particular states or countries, so it is best to check if any restrictions apply to the lottery prior to participating.

Despite the above considerations, Mexican citizens can certainly win the lottery and any associated prizes.

Unluckiest people

With millions of tickets in play, inevitably there are also some very unlucky cases each year. Here are some of the worst situations we’ve seen:

  • A man missed a €700,000 fourth prize win by one digit – his ticket was off by a single number.
  • One woman lost her purse containing a €20,000 fifth prize ticket hours before the drawing.
  • A group missed out on a €250,000 smaller prize after forgetting to check their numbers for weeks.
  • One couple divorced shortly before winning €400,000, forcing them to split the money.

While El Gordo creates many winners, it leaves some others tantalizingly close to life-changing prizes just out of reach. But this is part of the drama and excitement that makes the Spanish Christmas lottery so popular!

A ‘guiri’s’ guide: What is El Gordo, and why is it so popular?

For those unfamiliar with the yearly tradition that is Spain’s Christmas lottery, here’s a quick explanation of the famous draw that has enchanted the nation for more than 200 years

Barring a major disaster, December 22 is the only day of the year when every TV news report, radio bulletin and online newspaper in Spain will be leading with images of people celebrating. Men and women hug one another, pop open bottles of champagne and dance in front of the cameras while showing off tickets with a five-figure number. They are the winners of Spain’s Christmas lottery, a tradition that is as enshrined in Christmas celebrations as turrón or the Three Kings. Spanish people on average spend €2.76 billion on lottery tickets – that’s €60 per person.

The lottery draw, which can last up to six hours, is followed live by millions of people on television, radio and online and unofficially marks the beginning of the festive season. But seeing as there are dozens of lotteries and betting games that take place throughout the year and are booming online, why does this lottery – which began in 1811 – continue to be so popular?

The first thing has to be that Spain’s Christmas lottery gives out a lot of money – 70% of overall ticket sales – but it doesn’t tend to turn anyone into a multimillionaire. Unlike other lotteries where the winner takes home an astronomical figure and can immediately retire, those who hold a décimo (a fraction of a €200 ticket that costs €20) in the first-prize number – known as “El Gordo” (The Fat One) – win €320,000 after taxes. It’s a more than respectable prize: winners can free themselves of financial burdens, indulge in a whim they have always dreamed of, start a business or pay off mortgages. But typically, the top prize doesn’t set you up for life.

While the prizes are not massive there are lots of winners. It’s also common for them to know one another. Because numbers are also divided into 170 series, there are actually 1,700 décimos for every one of the 10,000 numbers. Work colleagues often buy a décimo with the same number. As do members of neighbourhood associations. So when a number wins, everyone wins.

This element of community celebration is undoubtedly the reason why it is the most popular national lottery in Spain. It is also what encourages people to buy tickets. First to share in the fun of playing the same number as people close to you. But also so that you’re not left empty-handed if the number wins. In other lotteries, the only risk of not playing is not winning. With Spain’s Christmas lottery, there is the added risk that you will be left out of the party. That’s why lottery tickets are often shared: two or more people buy the same décimo or participación (a portion of the same ticket) so they win at least something if their number is drawn. It’s also a way of sharing the cost of playing.

Another very important part of the Christmas lottery is the event itself. It is most likely the longest and most ritualistic in the world. The numbers are drawn out by young boys and girls (but only since 1984, when the school became mixed) from the San Ildefonso school, which was founded in the 16th century and is the oldest in Madrid. Back then, it was an education centre for orphans but now it is a public school.

The spectacle begins at 9am. That’s the moment two dome-shaped lottery machines begin to spin with numbered balls. One giant golden dome contains the 100,000 numbers that have been put up for sale, while the smaller one has 1,807 balls numbered with prizes. Of these, 13 are major prizes – from €6,000 for a décimo to €400,000 for El Gordo. The remaining 1,794 are prizes of €1,000 for every décimo or €5 for every euro (the so-called Pedrea). The children pull out the balls one by one, pairing numbers with prizes and singing out the figures in the fashion of Spain’s theatrical tonadilla songs. Another important point is that you never know the order in which the prizes will be drawn. This helps maintain the suspense during the hours-long event and keeps audiences glued to the internet, radio and television.

Almost everyone will play again next year. Partly in the hope of winning millions of euros with El Gordo. Partly not to look like a fool if their neighbour wins it.

When does the draw for El Gordo take place?

Every year, El Gordo takes place at December 22. The day before the number of bowls and prizes are being thoroughly counted and recounted. Some assistants also check the balls, so that everything is in order for the next day. The actual draw takes place in a saloon.

How much money does El Gordo de Navidad win?

In 2020 the total prize winnings for the Christmas season draw is E2.4 Billion across the country. It has become a tradition that almost all citizens take part in every year. Families, coworkers and friends will often go in on tickets together, even small towns have won big in the El Gordo de Navidad.

When do you get paid for El Gordo?

When is El Gordo Christmas 2020 in Spain?

The most exciting day in Spain: El Gordo Christmas on 22 december 2020. Christmas is the most beautiful time of the year, and definitely in Spain. In this beautiful country it has been the most popular lottery for many decades. It’s actually one of the greatest traditions in Spain. Millions of people love to play it with their family and friends.

What makes the Spanish Christmas Lottery so special?

The truth is that the novelty of the Spanish Christmas lottery isn’t the amount of prize money that the winners get. What makes this lottery special is the idea of sharing the prize among family and friends. A full lottery ticket itself costs €200, which is a lot to drop at once.

Why to play in elgordo?

Here you have some reasons to play in elGordo.com: Because more than 150.000 customers trust in us. Because we have customers in more than 140 countries. Because we have experience selling lottery since 1860. Because we are a company on the web since 1996. Because we are to serve and help you.

Nearly €2.6 billion at stake

The success of the Christmas lottery lies more in tradition than in the possibility of winning the very big prize: with a grand prize, the famous «El Gordo», at 4 million euros, or 400,000 euros for a tenth purchased, not enough to become a millionaire.

Let’s go back to our example with the number 27610: if it is drawn first prize, there are 185 prizes of 4 million euros to be distributed. If the tickets were sold in tenths, then the 1,850 holders of a tenth of a ticket with that number will win €400,000 each.

In 2018, some of Madrid’s kiosquiers popped the champagne after winning «El Gordo». REUTERS/Jon Nazca

Dozens of other awards follow. There are the classics: the second prize (€1.25 million), the third prize (€500,000), two fourth prizes at €200,000, eight fifth prizes at €60,000 and finally the «Pedrea». This is the smallest prize in the lottery set at €1,000, or €100 per tenth, but it is awarded to 1,794 numbers.

Then there is a whole series of prizes determined by the numbers drawn previously: the two numbers before and after «El Gordo» win 20,000 euros each, for example. The same goes for smaller sums for the numbers surrounding those drawn for the second and third prizes. It’s technical, we told you.

And that’s not all! Small sums of money to win a few euros per tenth bet are also awarded to numbers whose last two digits coincide with those of the first prizes or those of the same hundred.

In total, each of the 185 series of tickets is worth €14 million. That’s €2.59 billion up for grabs if you add up all the tickets on sale. According to Radio Television of the Canary Islands, each Spaniard spent an average of €71.67 on tickets, compared to €69.36 last year.
