«Loterнas y Apuestas de Estado (LAE) would like
to inform the general public that a number of groups of criminals of various
nationalities are using the prestige and the commercial names of the Spanish
Lottery by fraudulent means in several countries. They move easily around the
whole world and use mobile telephones, PO boxes, provisional or false addresses
(including real addresses of official Spanish organisations), as well as names
that bring to mind prestigious institutions («el Gordo», la Primitiva»,
«European Lottery Commission», etc.) They also forge the printed sheets and
signatures of various banks or insurance firms.

In order to carry out the fraud, the
procedure that is generally followed consists of informing the potential victim
that they have been the lucky winner of a substantial prize (even if they have
not participated in any draw), although they cannot collect this prize until
they have paid an amount going towards the taxes, bank costs, delivery costs or
insurance processing, etc. Usually, the fraudster warns their potential victim
that the deadline to pay these charges is very soon and that their right to
collect the prize is about to expire.

Loterнas y Apuestas del Estado, that is, the Spanish Lottery,
wants to inform
very clearly the following:

  1. To win a prize of the Spanish lottery is
essential to have purchased previously lottery or bets of our range of
    products.

  2. Spanish lottery prizes are always free of
    taxes and burdens.

  3. When you are offered «prizes» that seem to be
linked to the Spanish Lottery, DO NOT PAY ANY AMOUNT. We are, in all
probability, before a criminal fact that must be reported to the
authorities. The Spanish Police has already arrested and subjected to legal
procedures some of the members of groups who were operating from Spain.

  • относительно невысокая стоимость билета (от 1,5 евро за одну ставку), можно купить сразу несколько билетов;
  • часто можно «отбить» сумму величины билета (за минимальное количество совпадений);

EL Gordo De Navidad?

This year alone the Spanish El Gordo Draw will pay out over €3 BILLION to over 1,202,490 cash prize winners in Spain and around the world.

70% of Ticket Revenue Paid Out as Prize Winnings

70% of all monies invested in El Gordo are returned to players in cash prizes — compared to only 45% or 50% paid out by North American and European Lottos.

One out of Every 3 Tickets Wins a Prize!

Only 100,000 ticket numbers are printed for each draw — and over 37,000 prizes are paid out! This gives you 1-in-3 odds of winning a share of the huge cash payouts. These are the best odds for a big win you’re likely to find anywhere.

All Prizes Paid Out in a Lump Sum

El Gordo cash prizes are paid out in a single lump-sum — not spread over 20 years like some North American Lotteries. When you win, your prize money is transferred directly to you – IN FULL and in the currency of our choice – to any bank in the world you specify.

Play El Gordo from Anywhere in the World!

You don’t have to be a Spanish national to play and win in the El Gordo Draw. Through the services of Overseas Subscribers Agents, you can enter Spain’s Richest Lottery from wherever in the world you may be.

OSA has been entering players into overseas Government Lotteries, and collecting and sending them their winnings since 1988. Over 155,000 international players have taken advantage of this service, and many still continue to enter their favorite Lotteries with their special numbers.

Through OSA, you’re kept up to date on all current Jackpots and Draw results so you can join in whenever you want. The company processes your entry, and then collects and sends you your cash winnings IN FULL.

Should you play El Gordo?

Is participating in Spain’s El Gordo lottery a smart move or a reckless gamble? Here are some key factors to consider if you’re thinking about playing:

  • Odds of winning – While El Gordo has better odds than other giant lotteries like Powerball, your chances are still miniscule at around 1 in 100,000.
  • Budget responsibly – Only spend disposable income, not rent or food money. The odds are stacked against you.
  • Small shares – The €20 shares lower the barriers to participate without overspending.
  • Millions of winners – Some people do actually win, it’s not impossible!
  • More than money – Playing with friends or community can bring joy and excitement beyond just potential prizes.

In moderation, participating in El Gordo represents a fun end of year tradition more than a retirement investment strategy. But dreams of riches will continue driving millions to play.

How many people win prizes?

With so many tickets sold across the 160 million or so, there are thousands of winners in El Gordo every year. Here is a breakdown of approximately how many people win the different prize categories:

Prize Winners
First Prize 720
Second Prize 1,080
Third Prize 1,600
Two Fourth Prizes 2,640
Eight Fifth Prizes 9,600
Approx. 15,000 smaller prizes 15,000
Total Winners 30,640

As you can see, over 30,000 people will generally win a prize in El Gordo each year. The vast majority of these are those smaller prizes in the hundreds or low thousands of euros. Still, with 720 people winning around €400,000 each for the top prize, thousands can have their lives changed in an instant with El Gordo.

“Yesterday ‘Rowley’, while we were mid-flight, we received word from Clarissa that her relationship with Vicente Saavetra, her lover of the past two years, had officially ended”Lily explained. Raoul added: “You know it surprised me too because Clary didn’t say anything about it.”.

El Gordo – the Christmas jackpot

Spain’s Christmas Lottery is famous for giving out the most number of prizes per ticket purchased in the world.

Whereas many lotteries across offer a single jackpot to a single ticket holders, in Spain hundreds of people can each win the €400,000 El Gordo prize.

Every player also has an equal 1 in 100,000 chance of winning El Gordo, compared with a 1 in 139,838,160 change of winning a EuroMillions jackpot.

This is because Spain’s Christmas Lottery limits itself to 5-digit numbers from 00000 to 99999.

Selling one ticket per person means just 100,000 tickets on sale, which is why Spain’s Christmas Lottery has devised a system allowing more than one person to win the jackpot.

Families with multiple wins

With so many players each year, some Spanish families have managed to win El Gordo multiple times over the years and even generations. Here are some of the luckiest multi-generational winners we know of:

  • One Catalonian family has won big prizes three times across 30 years – in 1987, 2011 and 2021.
  • A husband, wife and three children in Valencia have each won smaller prizes both together and separately over 20 years.
  • One Basque family had the same numbers held by the grandmother, mother and daughter each win prizes in 1992, 2008 and 2020.

For these fortunate dynasties, El Gordo seems to run in the family! Their repeated good luck defies the odds to become part of their family histories.

Recognitions and tributes

A few months after Laurel’s death, the opening of Sons of the Desert , Laurel and Hardy’s official «fan» club, took place in New York . The name was adopted from the movie Sons of the Desert (Spanish Party Partners , ). Later the club would have sections in the rest of the United States , Europe and Australia .

Larry Harmon acquired the couple’s image rights in the mid-1960s, and in 1966 he produced the animated series Laurel and Hardy , with Hanna-Barbera Productions. Animated versions of Laurel and Hardy also appeared in an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies in , with Harmon voicing the two characters. On the television series Harmon voiced Laurel and Jim MacGeorge voiced Hardy.

Roberto Gómez Bolaños did several sketches in tribute to Laurel and Hardy within the series El Chapulín Colorado and Chespirito .

In Larry Harmon produced a feature film direct for video entitled The All-New Adventures of Laurel and Hardy: For Love of Mummy . The plot featured two fictitious nephews of the couple who made the same mistakes and gaffes as their legendary uncles. It was played by Bronson Pinchot and Gailard Sartain .

Most of his movies can be found on video or DVD .

Charity winners

While most people play El Gordo for themselves or their organizations, some winners opt to donate their prizes to charity. With anonymous lottery winners every year, there are surely many more charitable givers than get publicized. But we do know of some recent big charity winners:

  • In 2021, an anonymous winner in Catalonia donated their entire €200,000 fifth prize to a local hospital.
  • In 2020, a Madrid winner gave €150,000 of their €350,000 prize to a homeless assistance program.
  • In 2019, a small town’s soccer club donated 10% of their €500,000 in winnings to youth sports.

For most, playing El Gordo is about personal gain or helping friends and family. But some winners have paid the luck forward to support meaningful causes too.

The parts of an El Gordo ticket

All El Gordo tickets are numbered from 0 to 99,999 so there are 100,000 numbers every year. You cannot choose your own number if you purchase from a lottery office or bar. In a lottery office, you will be able to choose from the numbers available and many people try to buy a number that includes their ‘lucky number’. The wait for a ticket can be a long one, particularly during December, when people stand at the counter and discuss the ‘luckiness’ of each number. You can choose from tickets available if you go onto the official El Gordo website.

Each ticket, called a billete, has 10 décimos and each year the tickets are printed in series. The number of series has varied over the years. In 2022 there will be 170 series.

Pero Que? Pero Que?

What do I need to buy to enter?

Players can choose to buy a full ticket costing €200, known as a billete, or purchase a decimo for €20 which is a tenth of the size. It is common for groups of people to split the cost of a billete to play as part of a syndicate, because buying one outright can be expensive.

Once you have bought your pre-printed decimo or billete, you will be eligible for the draw which sees a set number of tickets sold, all with pre-generated codes. Each ticket belongs to a number of series which can vary each year. There were 170 series in the 2017 draw, each of which contained a set number of prizes. The top prize offers one ticket in each series the chance to win €4 million on a billete. There are 16 tiers of other prizes available in each series for raffle codes which come close to the winning code.

El Gordo y la Flaca (literal translation: The Fat Man and the Skinny Lady; official translation: The Scoop and The Skinny) is a Spanish-language entertainment news show. The title is a take on the Laurel & Hardy comedy act of the 1930s.

  Broadcast history

El Gordo y La Flaca first aired on 21 September 1998 at 4pm/3c (16:00 ET) and is hosted by Raúl De Molina, aka El Gordo, and Lili Estefan, aka La Flaca. Estefan is the niece of music mogul and producer Emilio Estefan, the husband of singer/song writer Gloria Estefan.

El Gordo’s often irreverent attitude is balanced by La Flaca’s more demure manner. The show combines interviews with actors, musicians, and other celebrities with reports on their comings and goings. The show appears weekdays on the Spanish-language television network Univisión. It is filmed in the network’s studios in Miami, Florida.[citation needed]

On December 15, 2006, as a send-off homage to Rebelde, El Gordo y la Flaca opened with the cast dressed in Elite Way school uniforms, with Lili Estefan as Mía Colucci and Raúl De Molina as Giovanni Méndez (complete in dyed orange/red hair), while doing a parody to the show’s opening theme, Rebelde. It is notable that the homage was pre-recorded, as Raúl De Molina did not appear on the show on the day when Rebelde was shown for the final time in the United States.[citation needed]

Though shalt buy a lottery ticket

For the 2021 Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad, authorities have chosen the 1426 painting La Virgen de Granada by Fra Angelico to decorate this year’s tickets.

The tradition of choosing paintings associated with religion dates back the 1960s, when lottery authorities began experimenting with different pictures for their different national lotteries.

While authorities put artistic, literary or sporting images on national lottery draws throughout the year, they always used a religious image for the Christmas Lottery due its proximity to Christmas day.

The tradition has continued unbroken to this day.

Conclusion

In conclusion, El Gordo Lottery is a captivating annual event that offers immense potential winnings and has a profound impact on Spanish society. While the odds of winning the grand prize might be challenging, the thrill of participating and the inspiring stories of past winners make it an enticing lottery. Whether you’re playing for fun, the joy of contributing to a cultural tradition, or the possibility of changing your life, El Gordo remains an iconic and beloved lottery cherished by millions worldwide. Remember to gamble responsibly and make wise decisions as you embark on your El Gordo journey.
